Boat Responsibly: Have a Float Plan What is a Float Plan? Simply put, a float plan is a written summary of your boating itinerary. Whether you plan to be gone for just a few hours on your boat or if you expect to take a longer cruise, it’s a great idea to let someone you trust know where you expect to be and when you expect to return. Why create a Float Plan? An emergency situation can happen anytime or anywhere, whether on an inland lake or a blue water passage. If a situation occurs where a search effort must be initiated, having all your information in one place can make a difference in the outcome of rescue personnel finding you. What to include in a Float Plan? There is no standard form for a float plan. You can hand write or type your own or even fill in [...]
Boat Naming Boat naming your vessel can be quite a daunting task. Do you go with something traditional like naming it after your significant other? Or do you shift gears toward where you’ve been, where you’re going or what you’ll do when you get there? Do you “tack” in some nautical terminology or do you steer clear of the puns? The options are endless and there is so much room to represent you and your life (or not). Check out a few considerations we recommend below to help aid you in your decision! Consideration 1: Before finalizing your vessel’s name, do a quick search for its popularity. Be sure to take a stroll through your local marina and/or boat yard, too! If you pick a popular name, there is a good chance you’ll end up crossing paths with another vessel in your boating region with your same name. This creates [...]
Boating with Children Boating with your family can be the ultimate adventure, even when your family consists of small children! The water is the perfect place for lifelong memories to be made and valuable skills and connections formed. Stepping out of your day-to-day routine allows time for more focus on connecting as a family! Boating is also a great opportunity to teach your children lessons such as teamwork and how to have fun together. When properly planned out, boating with children is not difficult, but actually great family fun! Here are a few of our best tips for successful boating with children: Remind them of the Rules Before even stepping on the dock, run through your list of rules and expectations for when you board the vessel. Two great rules we’ve found to be the most helpful include: children always wear a lifejacket – no exceptions & when the engines [...]
Why the Davit Worksheet When you are ready to explore your Hurley Davit options, the first step is to fill out our Davit Worksheet. We do not keep a database of all the different vessel platforms or dinghies. There are just too many variations. From added platforms or other accessories like grills and grab bars, each set up is unique. We want to be absolutely sure the system we recommend is going to work with your specific set-up! We do not keep measurements on file based on vessel or dinghy types . . . The Davit Worksheet asks for a number of measurements including platform width (port to starboard), platform depth (transom out to the edge), height off the water (top of the platform down to the water), transom height (top of the platform to the top of the transom), as well as dinghy length, beam & total weight including [...]
Davits - Helpful Questions when looking for a Davit Todd Hurley of Hurley Marine explains how the right davit makes loading your dinghy a breeze. Crystal Hayes / Regal 32 What are the benefits of bringing a tender aboard using a davit? Hurley: Instead of towing a dinghy behind your craft, you easily can bring it aboard to eliminate performance-robbing drag. The low-profile storage position on Hurley Davits provides exceptional stern visibility. What factors should be taken into consideration when choosing a davit? Hurley: Platform and dinghy measurements, as well as weight, should be kept in mind. We advise choosing the best davit for your boat and letting that dictate your choice of dinghy. Remember that dinghy size and weight may impact trim, performance and the structural integrity of your vessel. While some boat owners get around this by towing their dinghy, it's neither safe nor practical. Are davits hard to install? Hurley: Hurley Davits are easily mounted with simple [...]
